Unraveled Wednesday – It’s Been Too Long!

Hello all! It’s Wednesday, so I’m linking up with other knitters and readers over at As Kat Knits.

I can’t believe it’s been a month since I blogged – where has the time gone?! I’ve had a few busy weeks at work and have lacked the mental energy to both write posts and read posts from others – and I always feel bad writing things when I haven’t read and commented on other people’s posts. Plus, the US Open tennis tournament was happening the past two weeks and my roommate and I watched that a lot at night, it was very conducive to knitting but less good for reading people’s posts. Hope you’re all doing well, and I’ll slowly catch back up with what people are doing!

I have actually gotten a good amount of knitting done! I finished the test knit top I was working on, but I’m going to wait to show it off until it’s been released. I also completed a test for a lacy sock – I’m not done with the pair because I only had to make one for the test, so that’s what I did haha. I’ll get the second one done eventually.

I’ve been doing a ton of work on my Ranch Coat! I’m now midway through the first sleeve. I’m hoping to finish this off in the month of September. I’m really loving how this is turning out. It’s going to be such a warm, cuddly cardigan when complete.

Next up for me will be the Slipstravaganza MKAL (Ravelry link). I’ve hesitated on doing Stephen West patterns MKALs before, because some of his patterns look like they’re a little too crazy for me. But, there are actually a ton of reasons why I now want to do this:

  • at least one of my knitting club friends is doing it and I love making along with my knitting club friends (see above)
  • I finished a Stephen West pattern last year that I do really like
  • I love slip stitch patterns
  • I had great success with MKALs earlier this year
  • Who cares if it’s crazy, I’ll just wear it working from home and no one will see it anyway

The pattern calls for 2 skeins of a MC and 3 CCs – so it’s probably going to be very large! I feel like I have so much fingering weight yarn (though not necessarily a lot of multiple skeins), so I kind of want to knit this from stash. I spent a few minutes this afternoon putting together a few combos. I’m drawn to 2 and 3 from a color combo standpoint, but I also already have a ton of blue and green, so I like the idea of the purples in#4, but I’m not sure there’s enough contrast there. My friends like 2 and 4, with 4 being the favorite. Maybe the natural yarn as the MC with #4s CCs? What do you think?

On the reading front, I don’t have nearly as much progress. I did finish The Shadow of the Wind, and I really loved it! It was a very engaging story and I’m super happy with how it ended. I guessed the main “mystery” of the plot but would not have expected the ending and was pleasantly surprised. The book was spooky and a bit intense at times, but also a really rich story. It’s definitely worth a read. I haven’t read much at all since finishing that. I took out an ebook from the library’s system which I finally got set up, but didn’t really get into it.

Life wise, not too much is going on, as you might expect from a single person with no kids during a pandemic. It’s not bad though, just kind of boring. I am looking forward to a long weekend the 25-28th, I booked an AirBnB still within CT just to hang out and chill for a few days in a different place. Hope to be blogging more consistently again, but with me you never know!

  1. Welcome back! I had been missing my fellow insurance/knitting nerd. I vote for combo 4. I think it would make a beautiful shawl. I thought about doing the MKAL but would have to buy two skeins of matching yarn so I decided to buy a bunch of random sock yarn instead.

  2. I was just thinking about you! I’m glad to see you’re well and happily knitting along. And Air BnB sounds amazing!!

You’re right about the Stephen West shawl size. I did one of his MKALs a few years ago and it was a MONSTER. I’m tempted to sign up, but I’m not sure that I have anything appropriate in my stash… but now you’re making me second guess my decision. It just might be the kick in the butt I need to finish my current sweater!!

It’s overwhelming to try to catch up when you fall behind with blogs. My vote is to start fresh and don’t worry too much about catching up with EVERYONE!

  3. Time sure does fly! I love the green lacy sock – so pretty. Of the yarn combos, I like 1 and 3 as I like the paler main colour. I look forward to seeing your creation!

  4. I like all of the yarn combos, but I think my favorite is #1. Partly because the colors are more muted and subtle, and I feel that might help tone down the crazy of a Stephen West pattern. 😉 (But it also might not be enough contrast to properly show up, either.)

I still want to read Shadow of the Wind! I’ve been meaning to read it for ages, but I keep getting distracted with other books.

  5. Lots of things going on here for sure. I liked 1 and 4 , with 4 being my favourite, for what it’s worth. I really like the green sock. Have a wonderful few days away, a change is as good as a rest, and you will have the rest too. Have a good weekend.

  6. I don’t know how to predict a finished knitting project based on the yarn but the colors in #1 are speaking to me! I know assessing contrast/balance/etc. with knits is a whole skill set I can’t access though, and I’m sure whatever you pick will be lovely.

    1. Thanks for responding! Yeah it’s definitely a bit hard to tell when the yarns are still in the skeins. I think #1 is not contrasted enough, but I’ve actually rethought and I think I’m going to use 2 of the colors from that and two from #4.
