Twists and Turns Time!

It’s finally one of my favorite times of year – West Knits Mystery Knit Along time! The first clue came out this morning. This will be my third year in a row participating, and I’m really looking forward to it. My first two came out amazing, and I can’t wait to dive into whatever complex and crazy thing Stephen has planned for us. The first clue already has no chill, it’s such classic Stephen West.

I was hoping to pull yarn from stash (last year I bought), but the requirements didn’t really allow me too. I usually only buy one skein of fingering weight yarn at a time (unless I have a sweater planned), and so because this shawl required two skeins of two colors, it was basically impossible. I probably could have pulled the “pop” color from stash, but I actually didn’t have too much solid/tonal to work with, and if I’m buying four skeins I might as well buy 5…

I’ve made a few projects with yarn from Moondrake Co yarn, so I decided to see if there was anything that would work for this. I decided to go with Blue Sage, Spruce, and Mauve from her fall collection. Life has been a little hectic, so I don’t have a photo of the yarns together, but you can see them circled in the photo below.

Spruce and Blue Sage (the dark and light blue respectively) will be MC and CC, and the Mauve will be the AC color pop. I love the slight teal tint to Spruce and and I think the pink is such a nice pop. I’m really looking forward to working with this yarn and having a nice cool graphic shawl. I wound the yarn this morning and started the endless cast on on the bus.

Are you making the shawl this year?

  1. These are great colors! I’ve never knit a Stephen West pattern of any kind—MKAL or not—because they’re usually just a bit *too* crazy and complex for me. I hope you have fun with it, though!

  2. Beautiful colors. I’ve been watching the first pictures as they appear on Facebook and I can’t wait to see how yours goes. Once again, I’m lagging behind because I’m adventurous enough to jump into the knitting water until I can see how the pattern evolves. I love SW, but he is so dang creative…

  3. Your colors are great! This is my first year participating. I have always been hesitant because what if I knit something and don’t use it. Then I remembered that I actually knit things I don’t use all of the time and I should get over that. I’m so glad I have because it is such a fun knit. There is no way I’m going to finish any of the clues on time.

  4. Hey, was catching up on my knitting blogs this morning and thinking about yours; I remember you posting some little one minute videos last year. I hope all is well in your world and you are enjoying knitting your shawl still!
