Hello everyone,
Thought I’d pop in with some updates on what I’m crafting and reading since it’s Wednesday. Thanks to Kat over at As Kat Knits for hosting this link tree each week.
I really don’t have much to share since my post Sunday on the knitting front. I did finish the cuff of the first afterthought everything sock, so I’m slowly making my way through the second. I haven’t knit any on my colorwork socks or the sweater.
BUT, I have some great reading to share since the last time I did an unraveled Wednesday post. I’ve read every day but one so far in 2025, and while reading every day isn’t necessarily a goal I’m trying to track or stick to, I am enjoying doing more reading right now.
.![]() | I briefly mentioned this duology in my last Unraveled post, and I’ve since finished the second book. Daughter of the Moon Goddess and Heart of the Sun Warrior were both fantastic fantasy books. The worldbuilding was strong, and they touched on themes of family, love, and sacrifice. While there was a love triangle which was important to the story, I wasn’t bothered by it as I have been in some stories. |
![]() | The Last Folk Hero is the most recent of Jeff Pearlman’s works, and so now I can say I’ve read everything by him. This one wasn’t my favorite, I much preferred his Walter Payton biography, but it’s still an incredibly well researched and expansive biography. |
![]() | I subscribe to Franki De la Creataz (credited as Britni on the cover) on Substack, and they recently hosted an online book club about this book. Unfortunately I wasn’t able to attend, but I had wanted to read the book in case I was able to. I really wanted to love this book, and I do love that it exists to tell the stories of the women who played in the first professional tackle football league for women. But I had a hard time getting through it, I felt there was really no narrative and there was a lot of judgement given about how media and society perceived and perceives athletic women. I appreciate this being noted and called out, but as someone who follows women’s sports fairly closely, I know a lot of this already and would have appreciated a little less of a heavy hand. |
![]() | The Case of the Missing Maid by Rob Osler was AMAZING! Seriously, the only thing I disliked about it was that it’s brand new so I can’t dive back into this world right away. I downloaded this book to listen to on a whim during a recent bus ride, and wow, I’m so glad I found it. The character of Harriet is one of the most well written LGBTQIA+ characters I’ve come across, and I LOVED the descriptions of LGBTQIA+ nightlife in 1890s Chicago. A gay, historical mystery is EXTREMELY Kathryn coded, so it’s no surprise that I really loved this one. The mystery was also pretty good, with a twist I didn’t quite expect. I can’t recommend this one enough. |
![]() | Son of the Storm is a book I’ve had in my Nook library for a while. It’s a fantasy (the first of a duology) based on Western Africa. I’m enjoying the world and characters of this one a lot. There’s a lot of parallels to today’s political world in some ways, which is definitely interesting/ terrifying. |
![]() | The Lost Dreamer is what I’m currently listening to. I sometimes struggle with audiobook as in the past I didn’t really have a good time to listen to them. I get distracted if I’m home too easily, and my commute used to only be 10 minutes in the car, which made it hard to get into a book. But now I’m doing so much walking and taking some buses, along with a longer commute to the office, so I’ve started listening to books again. I actually started this book on my trip to Philli in 2024, but didn’t finish it once I was home. So I’m excited to get back into it. I’m only 10% in again, but so far enjoying getting back into the story and wondering how the two main characters are going to connect. |
I’m on StoryGraph as backstagekath, let’s connect! What are you reading this week?
