Happy Wednesday all! Thank you for your kind comments on my last post. I’m trying not to overcommit here, but I do have some books I want to share so I figured I’d check in for an Unraveled Wednesday post. Thanks as always to Kat for hosting the link up!

These are my current projects that I’m working on the most. The sweater on the left is the So Summer Sweater by Jessie Maed, I saw a sample of it using this yarn (Candide from De Rerum Natura) at a LYS I was at recently and knew I had to make it. I started this Friday and have just been flying through! In the middle we’ve got my tulips cross stitch I started way back in 2021. I’m committed to spending more time on this this year, and I’ve only got 3 charts left! In fact I’m hoping to finish off the little bit of the last tulip this week maybe? Then it’s just the stems to go! Finally we’ve got another pair of yoga socks. I’ve been taking contemporary dance classes again, and these are perfect for that. I started these earlier this month, and they’ve definitely taken a backseat recently, but I’ll probably start to work on them a bit more as the top gets a little more unweildy to take places.
My current read is the The Undetectables by Courtney Smyth. I saw this on Libby and thought it would be good. I’m having a bit of a hard time getting through it though. It’s weird because it’s a book I SHOULD love – queer fantasy mystery? Very Kathryn coded. But for some reason it’s not quite resonating with me. We’ll see if I keep reading or just let the hold lapse.
I got Motheater by Linda Codega as an audiobook, so progress on it has been slow. I can basically only listen to audiobooks in the car or when I’m cross stitching, I get too distracted otherwise. I haven’t had too much of time to do those things recently. But I’m enjoying the atmospheric witchy vibes and I’m interested to see how it will end. I’m traveling to MA for a few days in two weeks, so it might be a plane book.
Oh, When the Tides Held the Moon by Vanessa Vida Kelley was SO GOOD. It’s a gay love story with mermen and based in 1910’s NYC. There’s a great cast of unique characters and a wonderful found family message. I definitely cried during parts of the main love story, which was tough because I listened to this mostly while driving to and from Portland. But I highly recommend if the premise sounds like something you’re interested in!
I’ve recently gotten involved in an online community created by a trans sports writer, and it is one of the best things in my life right now. Part of that is a monthly book club, and on Sunday we discussed this book, The Cult of CrossFit by Katie Rose Hejtmanek. The author was there and it was really cool to hear her perspective. I found this book incredibly interesting, though it does read like a 150 page research paper, as the author is an anthropologist. The title is slightly click-baity, the main focus isn’t necessarily “CrossFit is a cult and here’s why,” but it explores how American Christianity informs the rise and downfall of a fitness program that could serve as religion for people who did it. I learned a lot about history and even though I’ve never done CrossFit, a lot of what informs it informs so many aspects of American life that I still found myself engaged.
