Omg, how is it Feb 24th already?!? March is less than a week away! This month has just flown by, my church responsibilities have been numerous so I just haven’t had much time for anything else but that and work.
But, as promised a few weeks ago, here’s the project I worked on for most of January, Ursa!
- Pattern: Ursa by Jacqueline Cieslak
- Yarn: Knit Picks Simply Wool Bulky in Wendy
- Timeline: cast on 1/14/21, cast off 1/23/21
This is the second time I’ve made this pattern, and it hasn’t quite turned out right either time. I mean, I haven’t done a gauge swatch so I’m really the only one to blame here. It’s just a bit too small. I think the primary problem is the row gauge, I would like it a little longer. I had almost a full skein leftover so definitely could have done that. I made some minor mods to try and make it fit a bit better. It became pretty clear just as I was about to separate for the sleeves that it may be too small, so I cast on more stitches than indicated for the underarms. This meant I have some extra of the half brioche ribbing around the sides and arms, and had to make some mods to the sleeves to decrease to the right number. I’m really happy with how that turned out and the fit is better around the body than it would have been had I not done that.
Overall this is still a good layering peice and something I’d like to try again. It’s a super quick and satisfying project, bulky weight is the best for cozy winter knitting. Making a gauge swatch will be key, writing this down for my own ability to remember that haha!

Yay for quick knits! Your Ursa is fabulous and such a useful colour to pep up dark winter outfits. It might be an idea to knit a version will all-over slightly bigger proportions, then see whether you prefer the more or less fitted versions. Sometimes you’ve just got to experiment, right?

It looks great! You could rip out the hem and knit another skein in there. I did that to my Carbeth as I didn’t like how cropped it was.

The colour looks great on you, and I love how well it pairs with your jumpsuit! (I hope it is a jumpsuit, I’m not very good with fashion terms!) Did you think about taking the BO out and then making it longer, or is it knit from the bottom up? In the end, you can always truly make a third one and incorporate everything you want into it!

Yeah I’m considering taking the BO out, but I think adding length would look better by adding it BEFORE the triangle detail, and that’s a lot more reknitting!
True! Okay, in that case, I think I’d rather knit a new one, too, and leave this one as it is.
